A piece of Mullingar
History

The Crossed Keys stands on the site of an ancient Augustinian monastery, founded in 1227. The monastery's eastern boundary marked the edge of the town, and its graveyard was located nearby. The "Crossed Keys" symbol, likely inscribed on a pillar that once stood in the area, is believed to have marked the monastery's boundaries. This symbol was also featured on the coat of arms of the Petit family, who ruled Mullingar for centuries.

The monastery fell into disrepair over time and was eventually closed in 1539. Its buildings were later demolished, and the land passed into private ownership. The site eventually became a pub in the late 19th century, serving as a gathering place for locals and visitors alike. Over the years, The Crossed Keys has played a vital role in the community, offering a welcoming atmosphere and a taste of Mullingar's rich heritage.
